How To Stay Sane In Quarantine!

You are probably all sitting at home right now, mindlessly scrolling through social media, counting down the days you can finally escape to the sweet freedom of the outside world. Trust me, we’ve all been there. Being forced to stay inside for who knows how long can be very mentally draining and cause us all to go a bit crazy. We miss our friends and pray for the day we can walk out our door and be free. But for the time being, we all have to take measures to ensure we don’t drive ourselves up the wall. This is a situation that none of us ever anticipated and it’s very normal to feel overwhelmed. So here are some things that might help lift these worries and help you survive our new best friend- quarantine.

Focusing on Yourself:

The most crucial way of getting through this time is to use these circumstances and think of how it can benefit you. This is your opportunity to take a break from the stresses of day-to-day life and focus on yourself for once. It is the perfect time to reflect on yourself, your priorities and what you want in life, while also enjoying your own company, which is so important. There is no point on dwelling on negative thoughts and complaining that you’re missing things because we are all in the same boat and many have it much worse. Instead, focus on how you can take advantage of this precious time off and come back from quarantine a better version of yourself. Think of all the times you’ve stressed about others' opinions and felt drained because all your thoughts were taken up by other people’s issues. Well this is the time to toss those thoughts in the bin and make space for your own. You can really take advantage of this to grow as a person and realise things about yourself that you never would have known if it wasn’t for taking some time to be with yourself. So forget about all the negative people that don’t matter, this is time for YOU!

Keep Busy:

If you’re anything like me, you’ve definitely lacked motivation and resorted to watching Netflix in bed with a tub full of ice-cream and hair that appears as if it was mauled by a cat. Although this sounds most ideal, eventually it will lose its appeal and you’ll end up losing all motivation completely. In quarantine it’s so easy to become depressed and lazy so that’s why it’s most crucial to keep yourself occupied for the sake of your physical and mental health. Negative thoughts in quarantine can creep up on you very quickly, so you must take action before they become too much. I have compiled a list of things that might just prevent you from becoming a potato on your bed:

  • Facetime friends

  • Do a puzzle

  • Learn a new skill (play an instrument, dance, art etc)

  • Have a pamper day

  • Paint your nails

  • Catch up on homework (I know I know but you’ll thank me later)

  • Meditate

  • Make a music playlist

  • Bake

  • Write letters to friends and family

  • Restyle old clothes

  • Do a workout (there’s hundreds online to best suit you)

  • Print photos

  • Perfect a hairstyle

  • Play board games

  • Do some yoga

  • Do something risky

  • Walk your dog

  • Research future plans

  • Recreate something you saw on Pinterest

  • Make a TikTok

  • Play online games with friends

  • SLEEP!

I would recommend making a plan of what you’re going to do every day so you can keep productive and keep a structured day.

Look on the Bright Side:

During this time staying positive is the best way to keep up the spirits of yourself and the people around you. If you constantly moan about how unfair all this is and how quarantine is ruining your life, all that’s going to do is give everyone around you a headache. It’s completely normal to express these feelings because we all share them but by actually examining the circumstances you might just find out how all of this is for the best. We have to remember we are in quarantine for a reason and the more we cooperate, the shorter the time we will be here. It’s okay to experience disappointment with the cancellation of plans but it’s about moving forward and focusing on all the future plans that will be made after quarantine. This is the time to ask yourself “What have I always wanted to do but never got the chance?”. You can finally start that book, learn that new skill, reconnect with old friends. Grab this opportunity and turn it into something worthwhile. This time away will make us all evaluate our own lives and realise how precious they are. We’re all developing an appreciation for the people and things in our lives and that’s why we miss them. We are going to come back from this mess better versions of ourselves who will make the most of the life we’re given and never take it for granted again. Think about how spectacular that is! This quarantine has enabled us to finally become content with the lives we are given and although at times it can get tough, we persevere and want to live it with all we’ve got. So use this time wisely to realise your life is worth living and to think about all that is waiting for you after quarantine!
